DR. S. Ramadoss
CHENNAI: The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) is not a terrorist organisation. It is working for the rights of Sri Lankan Tamils, Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss said on Sunday.
Asserting that the LTTE chief Prabakaran should not be considered a terrorist, Dr. Ramadoss told a press conference here that Prabakaran could not be caught. He would carry on his struggle for 20 more years, the PMK leader said, referring to the age of Prabakaran.
Equating the LTTE chief with leaders such as Yasser Arafat and Nelson Mandela, the PMK leader said just as Arafat and Mr. Mandela fought for the liberation of their people, Prabakaran was striving hard for the Tamils.
Welcoming the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Jayalalithaa’s support for the cause of Tamil Eelam, Dr. Ramadoss said the PMK, the Communist Party of India and the Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, constituents of the AIADMK-led front, had taken a common stand on the issue.
He called upon Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi to spell out his stand. Was Mr. Karunanidhi going to extend support to the formation of Tamil Eelam or would he regard the electoral tie-up and remaining in power more important, Dr. Ramadoss asked.
Referring to the statement issued by the United States on the issue, the PMK leader described it as a positive change and said this would turn the focus of the world to Sri Lanka. He reiterated that India had every right and duty to intervene in the matter.
To a question on MDMK leader Vaiko’s suggestion of projecting Ms. Jayalailthaa for the post of Prime Minister in the event of Third Front forming the government, Dr. Ramadoss endorsed it and said his party would certainly support the candidature of Ms. Jayalalithaa who, he said, had all the qualifications to hold the post.
