A CAMPAIGN by Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU)
Sri Lanka - What they don't show you in the brochures...
On January 26th 2010, Queen Mary Students’ Union (QMSU) ratified the ‘Free the Tamils’ motion which was jointly campaigned for by members of the Tamil & Amnesty International societies at QM.
The student union, which represents a body of over 15,000 students formally expresses solidarity with the oppressed Tamil people and has taken a principled stand against the genocide perpetrated by successive Sri Lankan governments.
Since independence from Britain in 1948, thousands of Tamils have been ethnically cleansed by the state from their traditional lands in the North-East of the island to make way for state-aided Sinhalese colonisation. In 1956, Sinhala was made the sole official language to the exclusion of Tamil.
In addition, since 1956, state-sponsored pogroms targeting Tamil civilians have resulted in thousands of murders, rapes and properties being destroyed. In 1981, the Jaffna Library, which housed over 95,000 Tamil books including many irreplaceable manuscripts, was burned to the ground by government forces in an act aimed to erase the cultural heritage of the Tamils.
Since the inception of war in 1983, tens of thousands of Tamil civilians have been murdered, raped and tortured by government forces with complete impunity. In the first 5 months of 2009 alone, over 20,000 Tamil civilians were massacred by the Sri Lankan army in the Vanni region. The recent detainment of 300,000 Tamil civilians in concentration camps for months on end is the latest form of inhumane treatment being meted out to the Tamils.
